Modular Architecture Propulsion System | (MAPS™)

PacSci EMC / Products / Networked Electronic Ordnance & Devices / MAPS™ Satellite Propulsion System

Providing station keeping, constellation management and deorbiting to the small satellite market, MAPS is a highly configurable, compact satellite propulsion system, complete with high-performance capabilities. MAPS has been demonstrated and proven on a 3u CubeSat and is compatible for many satellites, such as a 6u CubeSat and larger.

MAPS is an array of high performance, hermetically-sealed, solid propellant rocket motors which extends the orbital life of CubeSats, SmallSats and provides propulsion capability for small upper stages.  Our MAPS satellite propulsion system can be used for orbital maneuvers and deorbit with very precise and predictable delivered impulse. The module has no tanks, valves, tubing or heaters, making it a “plug and play” bolt-on design. MAPS is instant on with a 10+ year life, uses very low power, has three independent inhibits against firing, and provides variable thrust by firing in pairs, triples, quads, etc. MAPS is adaptable and scalable and fits in unused separation system or other spacecraft real-estate.

Our MAPS CubeSat thrusters are customized for CubeSat propulsion systems configurations at least 3u CubeSat or larger. Interested in our Powered Modular Architecture Propulsion System (P-MAPS™)? P-MAPS provides a fully powered module to assist with decommission and/or deorbit of a satellite, enabling compliance with the 25-year lifetime restrictions in orbit. Propellant Concept of Operations

The MAPS system is a clean burning solid propellant-based array of rocket motors and thrusters. Our small satellite propulsion systems require no large propellant tank or associated hardware nor a high electric current draw. Configurations for any cubesat propulsion module are available. Configurable for 3u cubesats, 6u cubesats and larger satellites.

  • No warm up time

System is operational anytime in 300 Milliseconds

  • Always very precise, predictable, repeatable

Distributed impulse bits (delta-V increments) reduces angular rate build up over fixed nozzle systems and improves delta-V predictability

  • High Isp performance

Duty cycle independent: from pulse mode to steady state, delivered mission Isp is constant

  • Hermetically sealed motors

Ready to fire immediately at satellite deployment or 10+ years later for deorbit/decommissioning

  • Safe, very clean burning propellant

Will not contaminate optics or solar panels

  • System architecture

    Results in very high reliability

  • Very low power

    No heaters or valves

  • “Bolt-on/plug and play” system

Leaves plenty of extra payload volume

  • Plug and play size and shape

    Customizable to fit the mission

  • Greatly reduces satellite factory cost

No integration of tanks, valves, fittings, or thrusters during satellite assembly

  • No fueling operations

Saves at least one week during launch vehicle integration with no propellant waste/disposal

  • Built-in-test (BIT) available

Anytime during mission operations from integration, launch, deployment and while on-orbit

  • Well known. Flight proven.

Solid propellant technology with three independent inhibit firing system, simplifies transportation and range safety approvals

  • Mission flexibility

Fire motors in pairs, triplets, quads, etc. for variable mission acceleration and delta-V flexibility

When it comes to SmallSat propulsion systems and SW(M)AP – MAPS EXCELS on all levels

  • Space: Fits into unused lightband volume
  • Weight (mass): Better than liquids – no valves, fittings, filters, large thrusters
  • Power: VERY low power: no heaters, solenoid valves, etc.
