PacSci EMC / Products / Mini Arm Fire Device (AFD)

The Mini Arm Fire Device (AFD) is an electro-mechanical device used to provide a reliable initiation of an explosive train when it is in the armed state. The mini AFD utilizes a Through Bulkhead Initiator (TBI) as the output to initiate an explosive train, which in turn, provides a pressure containment barrier after functioning, providing isolation between explosive elements (i.e. rocket motor ignition) after firing. When the mini AFD is in the SAFE position, the device is intrinsically safe from inadvertently initiating the output charge. In the SAFE position, the detonator is both electrically and mechanically isolated from any electrical inputs and explosive train outputs. An input voltage level is required to ARM the mini AFD. If the voltage is discontinued to the arming circuit before the detonator is fired, the mini AFD returns to the SAFE position.

The mini AFD is a significantly smaller package size then the heritage Universal AFD and features redundant detonators.

The mini AFD is used in mission critical applications where a reliable initiation device that is intrinsically safe from inadvertent firing is needed. In addition, the mini AFD provides a complete sealing barrier between explosive elements after firing. Typical application needing these mission critical attributes include rocket motor ignition.

The PacSci mini AFD is qualified and extensively used on solid rocket motor missile systems-
