Mild Detonating Cords (MDC)
PacSci EMC has manufactured millions of feet for linear explosive products over decades of continuous production. We manufacture MDC sheathed in a variety of materials for major oil and gas service providers. Our MDC is typically drawn or extruded into a round configuration. It can be rolled into an elliptical or flat ribbon shape, supporting complex needs. Our detonating cords can be further sheathed in metal tubes making it possible for the MDC to operate in temperatures of up to 500°F for 50 hours.
How Mild Detonating Cord Works
Mild Detonating Cord (MDC) is a metal clad linear explosive usually drawn or extruded in a round configuration. It can be rolled into an elliptical or flat ribbon shape based on the application. MDC is used extensively in weapon systems, aircraft and spacecraft for explosive signal transfer, separation and destruct.
MDC is available in a variety of continuous seamless sheath materials and explosives and can have core-load (explosive per unit length) ranging from 2.5 grains per foot to 100 plus grains per foot. MDC is typically processed to core-load tolerances of plus or minus 20 percent. Detonation velocities range from 6,000 – 8,200 meters/second depending on the explosive and metal clad material selected.
For added mechanical strength and environmental protection, MDC can be encased in polyethylene or nylon plastics. Typical MDC will rupture when fired unless outer layers of fiberglass, Kevlar or steel braiding are added for partial or full containment. These materials will add wall thickness to the total cross-section.

What Our Mild Detonating Cord Can Do
MDC provides point to point detonation signal transfer allowing for the networking of explosive / pyrotechnic components. The detonation shock and pressure along its length are also used to perform work during signal propagation. This energy has been used for canopy transparency severance and joint fragmentation for both vehicle skin severance and rocket motor jettison. The extremely fast nature of the detonation shock propagation combined with the energy release allows small diameter MDC packages to perform various mission critical functions.

MDC is used as the linear explosive baseline for multiple sub-systems and components. It has been primarily used in canopy transparency fracturing and transparency removal systems (CFS and TRS) dating back to the A7 Corsair, AV-8B Harrier, T-45 Goshawk and many others. MDC technology is also utilized for missile and space vehicles applications including explosive signal transmission, stage separation, skin severance and range safety flight destruct / destabilization. The Delta II Rocket, MX Peacekeeper ICBM program and Tomahawk missile are just a few of the vehicles to benefit from this products versatility.
